Here’s an interview Ollie did for Doommantia. Many thanks to Mari for this.

“Guaranteed 100% “No Bullshit Rock’n’Roll” – Interview with Ollie Stygall of Grifter …

It is difficult not to get caught by and to stay sober while listening to the juicy, ballsy, badass raaaaawk done by Grifter, and especially when you stumble upon one of their gigs. So those who missed them at the Desertfest in London last April or during their crushing tour with Orange Goblin have better catch these three Brits during one of the coming gigs during their invasion of the Continent!
In the meantime I got hold of Ollie Stygall, Grifter’s frontman: a friendly genuine rocker with a nice witty humour and a strong passion, as well as a highly appreciated reviewer for the fine UK webzine The Sleeping Shaman.

************************************

Mari – So, here we are, Ollie! Well, my intention was to start the interview with one of those classic questions that I like, i.e. about the history of the band and so on, but I guess that many many people by now know about Grifter after the blasting tour with Orange Goblin and the experience at the Desertfest in London! So I thought I might start with a flamboyant update for the fans!
I guess you have a lot to say about the tour through UK with Orange Goblin and a lot of expectations and curiosity for the coming dates on the “continent” …

Ollie – Oh thank you Mari, that does seem to be the standard opening question…I’ve heard it so many times I’m tempted to start making up utter rubbish in response!!!
The tour with Orange Goblin was incredible. It was great to be asked by those guys to go on the road with them and they showed us a lot of genuine hospitality, kindness and respect. The tour started off great with Desertfest. We headlined the Black Heart stage on the Saturday night and, despite the time clash with Orange Goblin in the Underworld, we ended up with a full room in front of us giving us a great reaction…it was a real buzz!!! The rest of the tour was also a real buzz. The only flat gig was Newcastle and even there we got a good reaction, everywhere else the crowds were amazing to us, we were blown away. Orange Goblin also put on a great show and Ben is an awesome frontman…it was a real lesson touring with them.
We can’t wait to come to Europe. We have two gigs in Belgium; Room 66 in Leuven and La Taverne Du Theatre in La Louviere on May 17th and 18th with our Italian buddies Doctor Cyclops then we head to Netphen in Germany to play the first Freak Valley festival with bands like Doctor Cyclops, Orange Sunshine, Bushfire, Wicked Minds and Colour Haze. It’s our first time in Europe and hopefully not our last. We’ve heard that European crowds are really cool and the beer looks awesome!!!

Mari – Oh, I am sure the Euro tour will be a blast as well! And I do hope, too, that more will come! And, by the way, how does it feel getting a mention in Metal Hammer?

Ollie – That was awesome. We didn’t even know they had the album so to get such an awesome review from them was pretty cool. I guess we should try to get them to a gig some time. Having said that all the reviews we’ve had so far bar one have been pretty damn good so we can’t complain?

Mari – OK, sorry, I have to do it, I can’t avoid it … For the unlucky ones, for those who still are not conscious about Grifter (!), I have to ask you, please, “that” question … i.e. to outline the history of the band and its roots, previous experiences of you guys, your personal definition of the music you play, how the adventure started, and the whole lot, you know what I mean …

Ollie – Aargh you did it!!!! Well, to sum it up, we formed in Plymouth, UK in 2003. At first we were a four piece with a different singer but he left right after we did our first gig, I mean literally as we walked off stage!!! No problem we were back on stage a month later as a three piece with Foz on drums, Phil on bass and me, Ollie on guitar and vocals and it’s been that way ever since. We started doing the usual local circuit and building up a following then did a demo (Elephantine 2005). Gradually we started getting gigs further afield around the country and caught the eye of Fury 76 Records who released our first EP (High Unholy Mighty Rollin’ 2008). After that we hooked up with Catacomb Records and appeared on their Sound Of The Catacombs compilation and put out another EP (The Simplicity Of The Riff Is Key 2010). The EP release coincided with a UK tour with Sun Gods In Exile which was a lot of fun.

Musically we’re just a rock and roll band…maybe heavier and dirtier than some but still just rock and roll. We don’t really buy into the whole stoner, doom, sludge labelling thing to be honest. None of us listens to much of that stuff and between us our tastes cover a huge range from metal to grunge to blues to ska to reggae to hip-hop to folk to 70′s rock and beyond. Collectively we all dig Sabbath, AC/DC, Clutch, Led Zep, ZZ Top, Motörhead…etc. it’s all just good, hard, arse kicking rock!!!

Mari – Thanks, Ollie, now the readers have no more excuses! Let’s go briefly back to the past again … I remember that when we started interacting via e-mail about three years ago you guys were basically going through the typical DIY routine of many many underground bands, surely with great satisfactions but tiresome as well. So I guess the encounter with Ripple Music was a great deed. By the way, how did everything start with the Ripple Music folks?

Ollie – Before they were a label Ripple was, and still is, a very well respected review blog so I sent them the second EP to review and they loved it. This was right at the time they were putting out their first release, the JPT Scare Band album. They asked us to be involved in the Heavy Ripples vinyl split alongside Stone Axe, Sun Gods In Exile and Mighty High so we naturally said yes. When we recorded the tracks for the split we decided to also record an album and see what happened with it but Ripple offered to release that as well. It’s been a great relationship so far, they’ve worked hard for us and want a second album so let’s see what the future holds.

Mari – And now that you are enrolled with a cool American label has life and activity changed in better or the interaction with a label induces stress? And do you miss the “early days”?

Ollie – Distance doesn’t matter with the Internet nowadays. Those guys put their backs into making things happen for the label and the bands and we have no complaints. In fact since we signed with them and put out the album things have been on a constant upward trajectory for us…we got on Classic Rock magazine’s CD, got the Orange Goblin tour, got offered the festival in Germany, hit a whole bunch of year end best of lists, got some incredible reviews…etc
The only thing I miss about the early days is that, now we all have home life commitments and now live in different towns, we don’t get to hang out socially anymore except at practice or gigs…but it makes those times more fun.

Mari – Another mandatory question is about your future plans with Ripple Music, although you gave us already a hint …

Ollie – As I mentioned Ripple have asked for a second album so we’re busy pulling material together for that and aim to record later in the year. The material is a mix of new tunes, some old tunes that have never been released and revamped versions of some other older unreleased stuff that now sounds killer…they’ve finally found a home!!! Other than that we’re working on more gigs and looking to get a European booking agent. There may be other cool things in the pipeline but it’s way too early to say anything now and jinx it!!!

Mari – Right! Well, can’t wait for the new album, then! Now I have another question about an important issue, i.e. about your constant activity in the promotion of your own band during all these years. You made a lot of efforts for auto-promotion and you never lost, let’s say, “faith” even when you had no or very sluggish reactions in forums etc. I admired you a lot for the effort. So do you think all that effort in auto-promotion was worth and effective?

Ollie – I guess “faith” is a good word to use. I have ultimate faith in the band and the music we create. I know we don’t fall into a convenient musical pigeon hole so a lot of the people who can’t see beyond their own narrow genre may pass us by, but a lot of other people do pick up on it. The thing is you have to promote your band if you want to go further than practicing or playing your local bar. It’s a very big world and the potential audience for each band’s music is huge, so you need to go out and get them as people won’t necessarily come to you. Every fan you pick up along the way is important but they need to know you exist. I’m passionate about Grifter, not just as a member of the band but as a fan of what we do. If I hadn’t put in the hours promoting the band, making contacts and getting our music heard there is no way we would have got as far as we have now.

Mari – In this respect, I often have the impression that many young or emerging bands have difficulties in organizing their auto-promotion. So how would you advise an emerging band about this issue?

Ollie – Unfortunately there is no guide book for this. It all boils down to investing the time and making sure you have a product worth promoting. If you’re starting out as a band don’t stick crappy quality rehearsal recordings on the Internet. Get a decent set together and gig it then choose some of the songs and record them properly. The next step is then to get your music in the hands of the people who can spread the word…magazines, fanzines, blogs, radio…etc. if that means spending money and ending up out of pocket then so be it. Put stuff online for free…people love free stuff!!! From there people need to know you exist so you need to start hitting forums, social media sites, posting news on blogs…etc. finally you need to make friends…organise gig swaps to get your music to new audiences, trade CDs, talk to blog writers…etc. maybe even start your own blog to review other bands and send your stuff out in return. Ultimately if you’re passionate about what you do that passion will spread and you will never regret the time and money necessary to promote a band.

Mari – I’m sure your words and advices will be of interest and helpful to many people out there. Well, Ollie, thanks a lot for the pleasant chat. All the best for the European tour and the cool things to come and keep on rocking hard! \m/

Ollie – “Thanks, Mari, for the interview and thanks for the support over the last few years. Hopefully we’ll.continue to kick your arse with rock and roll for a few more years yet!”

Thanks to Carolyn Davis at Quenched Music for the kind words…though now we have to write songs called Ease The Pain and Alabama Hotpot!!!

”

Initially feeling slightly out of my element here, I warmed up pretty quickly and even had a little mosh in the end. I stayed clear of the pit action though, something tells me it’s not advisable to join in with a pen in your hand.

We arrived just in time to join Jucifer on the third gig on their UK tour; melding doom metal and hardcore punk with a hint of southern rock from their early Georgia days to create their distinctive sludge sound.

I’m not sure sound control could have withstood the usual 60 amp set up that Gazelle Amber Valentine’s (great name, it has to be written in full) guitar usually runs through, but for only two people Jucifer managed to reach earth shattering levels.

There’s no interlude between songs, preferring to have Edgar Livengood’s rock-ride cymbals take us straight into the next track and relying on theatrics rather than banter to win the crowd over, with dramatic back-bends and hair flicks leading to the horned salute (which warmed my nostalgic heart) this was definitely the right crowd for that; even I joined in with a couple of appreciative head nods.

Grifter followed, a bit more my glass of ale, Ollie Stygall has the right amount of reverb working for him, a growl somewhere between AC/DC and Black Sabbath.

Ease my Pain compels the mosh pit to get a bit rowdy, while Alabama Hotpot is down and dirty filth (pun intended).

The tempo changes are subtle enough so as not to jar, but build you to the perfect climax.

The banter is a welcomed relief from the dramatic tension of Jucifer, ‘don’t be afraid to dance and if you’re female don’t be afraid to dance in front’, fat chance of anyone prying the hardened fans from the barricade at the front though. The place is filling up fast and I’m not surprised.

Quiet simply Grifter are good old fashioned Rock, meaning; great musicians coming together with a mutual love of all that is good and unholy.

As Orange Goblin takes the stage, we have lift-off. I’ve taken cover from the pit (which has gone into mosh overdrive) back firmly to the wall – this crowd mean business.

It’s reassuring to have Ben Ward commanding the crowd with his giant-like awesome presence, he could stage dive without having to leave the stage (I’m not really sure that makes a whole lot of sense, but I stand by it).

With the help of a few strategically placed red lights, there’s a blood bath on stage for the tribute to John Carpenter ‘The Fog’ from their 17th studio album A Eulogy for the Dammed.

But creative lighting aside, there’s no frills and no pretence to Orange Goblin just the mammoth riffs from Joe Hoare, the driving force of Chris Turner on drums and Martyn Millard on bass; who can flip the pace with a bang of the head, add that to the feral roar from Ben Ward, make this one of the best metal bands I have seen in a long time.

We may have waited 5 years for this new material, but it was certainly worth it.

Following the gig I left and sat in a quiet room, until the tinnitus subsided.

Here’s a review of the Fleece gig from the Orange Goblin tour from The Venue

”

Fleece, Bristol (Sun 8 Apr)

It’s Easter Sunday and a sweaty, sold-out Fleece is worshipping Sabbath. Rather too literally in the case of the pleasingly named Dopefight, who play a song that sounds suspiciously like ‘Sweet Leaf’ in a different key. Mind you, this power trio certainly serve up the riffs and make the most of their 30-minute set. One suspects this is the maximum they can survive with a reviving puff on the bong.

Pleasant surprise of the night is Plymouth’s jolly, cider-swilling Grifter, fronted by a portly chap who resembles Jack Black’s older, hairier brother. They work hard to fit into the stoner vibe of the evening, but their heart’s really in classic rock and you can’t help but feel that they really want to let rip and, well, boogie. Witty songs and banter too. “This a fictitious account of a bad encounter with a lady. It’s called ‘Bucktooth Woman’.” Marvellous.

This time last year, Japanese doomsters Church Of Misery easily blew away dull headliners Eyehategod. They face a tougher challenge tonight, but if anything they’ve got even better. The Miseries’ schtick is to perform songs exclusively about serial killers in the style of very early Sabbath, generally with slow, psychedelic intros followed by monolithic riffing. Vocalist Hideki Kukasawa also wrangles sounds from a synthesiser of the variety not heard since Eno was in Roxy Music, Dik Mik was in Hawkwind and the BBC Radiophonic Workshop did the audio effects for ‘Doctor Who’. Mercifully, they remain below the hipster radar, or the place would be full of goatee-stroking tosspots clutching dog-eared copies of Julian Cope’s ‘Japrocksampler’. The metal audience loves ‘em, and rightly so. Best gurning of the evening too.

When Orange Goblin first played the Fleece, they supported Queens of the Stone Age. Don’t even try to pretend you were there, because the place was only half full. Since then, the road-hardened quartet have gone on to stake their claim to the ‘people’s band’ mantle, gradually building a rabid audience. They’re super-tight, with a great guitarist in Joe Hoare. Objectively, the weak link here is hulking Ben Ward’s one-dimensionally gruff vocals. But as he supplies 90% of the band’s personality, they’d be lost without him. New album ‘A Eulogy for the Damned’ is their best yet, largely because, by their own admission, the Goblins actually put the work in this time. So we get plenty of songs from that, including the splendid ‘Acid Trial’ (which is “about taking as much acid as physically possible”) and the epic ‘Death of Aquarius’, alongside old crowd favourites like the neo-psychedelic ‘Time Travelling Blues’ and Motorhead-esque ‘Some You Win, Some You Lose’. And how could anyone dislike a band who play a song inspired by John Carpenter’s ‘The Fog’? (Robin Askew)”

Here is a killer review of the Orange Goblin show at Manchester’s Sound Control.

“Future Noise Presents: Bastard Of The Skies, Jucifer, GRIFTER and Orange Goblin @ Soundcontrol

Wednesday 11th April 2012 at Sound Control, Manchester.

Live Review by Chris Key

A truly impressive set of bands was due to lineup at Sound Control, Manchester and us guys at AATR were positively salivating at the prospect of a serious sludge metal and classic metal fest! Craig our resident interviewer was on his way down to the venue in anticipation of meeting the some of the nights mighty metal heroes to be, the videos of which can be seen here!!

Dave of Future-Sound let Craig and Andy in for the first round of interviews, Andy soon set up shop in the basement (a cold one may i add!) and we welcomed Bastard Of The Skies shortly followed by Gazelle Amber Valentine from Jucifer. Once the equipment and lighting was in place Craig went straight to business. A short time later Ant then interviewed Grifter & three members of Orange Goblin as the domineering front man was negotiating with some of the establishments toilet facilities. Photos and a handful of questions with each band were soon over and then it was back to HQ for refreshments prior to doors opening.

The night started out like all good nights, a quick trip to the place that is fast becoming the AATR office, The Salisbury rock pub, Manchester.

After we sunk a few pints of the golden nectar!! After the usual “what time is it?” “crap!! Down the lager” scenario, we hot footed it to Sound Control to get in prime position for what was due to be a night of musical treats, with varying degrees of influences and styles thrown into the metal melting pot!!

So for the curious of you out there, a little bit of background on the bands on the setlist.

Bastard Of The Skies: “Hailing from Blackburn, Lancashire, Bastard Of The Skies formed at the beginning of 2006 to play heavy, loud sludge rock.

Since then the band have bludgeoned audiences across the UK along with bands such as Baroness, Kylesa, Today Is The Day, Jucifer, Black Sun, Truckfighters, The Freezing Fog, Volition, Bersekowitz, Apes Fight Back, Nightmare Visions, They Are Cowards, White Fang, Sonic Lord, The Gods Of Hellfire, Larkin, The Sontanan Experiment, Grimpen Mire, Alunah and many more.”

Jucifer: “is a two piece sludge metal band signed to Relapse Records. The band’s members include Gazelle Amber Valentine on lead guitar and vocals, and her husband Edgar Livengood on drums. They travel in an RV and are “nomadic in nature”, preferring to tour constantly, living in their tour vehicle, rather than following the normal practice of album release/tour/time at home. Jucifer is notable for the extreme volume at which they perform, and the gigantic wall of amplification used for Valentine’s guitar, as well as the dichotomy that has existed between much of the recorded material and their live shows.”

Grifter: “Formed in 2003 Grifter have been tearing up the asphalt round Britain and playing kick ass gig all over this sceptered isle.” Simple as that really!!

and… Orange Goblin: “Inspired by the gods of hard rock, heavy metal, punk rock and underground extremity, from Sabbath, Motörhead and Thin Lizzy through to Celtic Frost, Danzig and Black Flag, Orange Goblin were initially seen as major contenders amid the mid-90s stoner rock explosion, but it soon became apparent that this band had much more up their collective wizard’s sleeve than red-eyed boogie and flapping flares.”

Now we’ve done the public service bit, let’s get back to reminiscing about the gig! The crowd was filling up, in this intimate, clean and super cool venue, filling up a lot quicker than gigs of this size would ordinarily, there was a buzz!! First on would be Blackburn lads (& lady) Bastard Of The Skies. Describing their music as like “A soundtrack to drowning in your own s**te” the guys went hell for leather delivering some uncompromising hard-hitting sludge-metal. The band made an instant connection with the crowd and belied their position as fourth on the lineup. A set that was full of aggression and constant energy and attack on the guitar, when the band loped off the stage I was left wanting to explore all of their material.

Next up was Jucifer. Jucifer have very much defined the sludge-metal genre. With a very unique selling point and dynamic within the band, they are a fearsome husband and wife metal combo of epic proportions! With a frontwoman with one of the best names in metal Gazelle Amber Valentine the scene was set for an intriguing set. Gazelle has a kind of devilish good looks and drummer Edgar Livengood is a hairy animal thrashing away manically on the drums. The set was quite progressive in its nature with one sludge-metal dirge melting into the next. The fantastic rock poses struck by Gazelle drew constant attention making for a fantastic spectacle. They also received good support from the crowd who seemed more than happy to join them as they embarked on some lengthy sludge-metal tracks.

After hearing great things about Plymouth based rockers Grifter and having a massive laugh with the guys backstage, we were right behind the guys with their high energy classic, balls out rock and roll sounds. Bouncing onto the stage, Grifter were greeted like kings and immediately set the crowd alight with gorgeous guitar licks and riffs with a stomping bluesy rocky feel!! The special thing about Grifter is they have the talent and sound to make everyone in the room feel instantly amazing and WISH they could be that rock star!! Thoroughly looking forward to getting our hands on some full length kick ass album material really soon.

After Grifter had positively ripped up the stage it was up to Orange Goblin to literally dismantle the place with their patented Stoner Metal.

Having toured around the world and support absolutely massive names on the metal scene such as Down and Queens Of The Stone Age these guys were bound to be pros. They took to the stage, instantly owning the crowd. Lead singer and man mountain Ben Ward was an absolute party animal and made sure he connected with the crowd in one way or another. Whether it was his bear-like arms reaching out to embrace the now frenzied crowd, or taking a swig of much needed water and spraying it around, he interacted! The riffs were absolutely insanely brilliantly. Guitarist Joe Hoare was as Ben described “A riff machine.” He started with a killer riff that hooked you, then proceeded to show you he had about 10 different variations of this riff, all awesome, all memorable, meaty and metal as f**k.

The night was a showcase of all things good about independant gig nights, a truly amazing and interesting collection of rockers who were all as cool as you like and all executed with the minimal of fuss, it was just all about the music. The metal was king and that is after all, what really matters!!

8 out of 10″

Big thanks to JJ from the Obelisk for his kind words about our Desertfest appearance.

“Though by the time Grifter were getting ready to roll, I was tired and I could feel myself being tired. For a soundcheck, the three-piece jammed out a bouncy, low-key riff — it reminded me of something Asteroid might have extended for another six or seven minutes the night before in the same room — and inadvertently hooked the crowd, so that when they stopped, the room erupted in cheers. It was awesome, though kind of a bummer they didn’t just pick up from there and keep going. There were still a couple minutes before their set actually began, but when it did, it was worth the wait. Like last year’s Ripple Music self-titled full-length (review here), the live show showed them as a no bullshit heavy classic rock band. They played a couple older songs off their first EPs, which were well received, and were a cool way to finish up the night. I think a lot of people had gone off to the pub or decided to call it quits on the evening, but those who stayed for Grifter were definitely rewarded for the effort. I did, anyhow. Their set was like the destination I’d been running to all day, and I suppose it was. I’ll be honest: I didn’t make it through the whole thing, with time wearing on and knowing this was going to be the giant slab of probably typo-laden copy it has turned into. As as been the case many times so far this weekend, though, I was glad I saw what I did.”

This time Steve at Sludgelord Blogspot has sprayed love all over the album

“Grifter have been going a fair while in the UK picking up fans wherever they play and go. Now after a string of acclaimed EP’s they have released their brilliant debut full length album.

Grifter take influence from the 70’s Hard Rock/Classic Rock bands such as Zeppelin, Sabbath, AC/DC, Thin Lizzy and mix it up with a great modern Stoner/Blues Rock vibe ala Clutch Style.

But they are not copycats but masters of mixing the genres together brilliantly well in true Grifter style. They released their long-awaited debut album last year to popular acclaim amongst the UK Rock Scene.

And its praise justified indeed. Their S/T debut album is an 11 song and 40 minute blast of hard rocking Stoner Blues Rock riffs.

These guys know how to play a mean good time hard-rocking riff that the old masters would be proud to call their own.

The first song “Good Day For Bad News” sets the tone of this hugely entertaining, head-banging and high voltage thrill ride. The riffs come thick and fast with a great blues rock feel to them. Grifter throw in superb tongue ‘n’ cheek lyrics to show they have a great sense of humour. Especially when being kicked about.

If you’re a fan of the above bands but with a modern Stoner Blues Rock twist then you will love this album from the word go. It’s superbly produced and played by all involved.

The great songs just keep on coming thick and fast with great tracks like “Alabama Hotpocket”, “Young Blood, Old Veins” and “Bucktooth Woman”.

These guys really do show a great sense of humour littered through out their music as they have lyrics to make you laugh out loud as well. Grifter are in the business of making sure the listener is entertained from the word go. And they succeed on every level. All of Grifter’s songs have a great story to tell that will have you hooked from the first listen.

I love bands like Grifer as they pay homage to brilliant bands past and present but do it in their own great way. They might not be re-inventing the wheel but when the music is so damn good you just don’t care. You just fall in love with the hypnotic riffs that Grifter play to perfection.

People might think this is too old school for them but its not. If you’re a fan of Clutch and other bands of that ilk you won’t be left out as they blend in a healthy dose of modern Stoner Blues Rock as well. This will have you shaking your boogie in no time.

These guys are getting a well deserved reputation in the UK that it’s going to catch on the international scene in no time. So much so they are legendary stoners Orange Goblin’s main support on their April 2012 UK Tour.

This is a gig I am going to and when I am there I will be down near in the front row rocking my heart out as I am truly thankful the world has bands like Grifter.

This album is simply superb and will leave a huge smile on your face. It has more good time riffs than most bands can produce in a whole career. And it’s another reason why I rate this album so highly. Simply Brilliant.

This album is available to buy from here and other good stockists. If you want to check out how great these guys are then check out their BandCamp Page where you can download their previous EPs on Pay Anything You Want Type Deal.”

The line-up details for Desertfest have now been announced. For those of you that live under a rock and don’t know, Desertfest is a new festival organised by the guys at Desertscene Rock that will run for three days from April 6th to the 8th over the Easter weekend in Camden. The festival, which looks set to be the UK equivalent of Roadburn with a quality line-up to match, or maybe even exceed its Dutch cousin, occupies three venues on each day; the larger Underworld, the slightly smaller Purple Turtle and the slightly smaller again Black Heart. All three venues are within walking distance of each other…with the Black Heart and the Underworld within spitting distance.

The weekend features a pretty stunning array of bands from across the stoner/doom/psych/sludge/classic rock spectrums including Orange Goblin, Corrosion Of Conformity, Karma To Burn, Church Of Misery, Roadsaw, Black Pyramid, Rotor, Leafhound, Truckfighters, Black Cobra, Zoroaster, Asteroid, Gorilla, Valiant Thorr, Gentlemans Pistols, Orchid, Samsara Blues Experiment, Lord Vicar, Greenleaf and many more…50+ bands over the whole weekend.

We are very pleased, surprised and honoured to announce we will be headlining the Black Heart stage on Saturday 7th April. Timings have been arranged to allow for minimal overlap between bands so Orange Goblin will finish in the Underworld by 10.15 then it’s a short walk to the Black Heart to catch our set then when we’re done it’s a 5 minute walk to the Purple Turtle to catch Slabdragger kick out their sludgey doom.

See you all there!!!

Full line up

Big thanks to Oliver Arditi for the very kind words

“If The Trappers, reviewed above, take a long established style, and exploit its capacity to tell authentic seeming stories, Grifter start from a position of sheer unalloyed delight in their chosen music. They’re not out to avoid clichés, but to revel in them: if you like shit-kicking, swaggering, leather-clad, fire-breathing rawk, then there’s really nothing to be gained by putting a Prius engine in your ’59 T-Bird. These songs are big, greasy bacon double-cheeseburgers of riff; deeply funky, high octane, blues ‘n’ kerosene howls of it, in fact. It’s all about groove, and while most of the blokes will be up the front headbanging as usual, I’ll be further back dancing with the girls. The playing’s great, the recorded sound is a fat throaty roar, with tight punchy drums in just the right place, and the vocal has a charismatic swagger that ties it all together beautifully. The songs are (sometimes ludicrous) paeans to the mythical rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle (‘I won’t kiss your daughter/ ’cos I got worse things on my mind’ is a typical example), and the whole thing comes across like a fan letter to the 70s, written in a mixture of blood, petrol and whiskey. There are times when the sound finds a creamy haze redolent of more recent stoner rock, but one way or another, this is resolutely old school stuff. ‘All about the rock/ all about the roll’ we’re informed in ‘Young Blood, Old Veins’, ‘rock ‘n’ roll’ being (in case you thought it was a style of music) an old Afro-American slang term for shagging. This album is unpretentious, high powered enjoyment. I’m a fan.”

In my internet trawling I found this recent review of the album from the guys at Uberrock…and it seems they liked it!!!

“With the current trend for replicating the alleged ‘simpler’ sounds of ‘born of the ’70s rock ‘n’ roll’ threatening to reach endemic status, Plymouth based trio Grifter have thankfully come up trumps with a tidy effort at it; and by that I mean it’s a record influenced by something, rather than a record trying to be something.

First track ‘Good Day For Bad News’ is a faithful yet individual sounding sludgy riff workout, combined with a very catchy chorus. They do the chorus thing very well actually as shown again on ‘Alabama Hotpocket’ which, whilst following the expected southern rock path its title suggests, also throws us up a very traditional fist pumping, chest beating classic era Kiss-like sing along.

‘Asshole Parade’ and ‘Strip Club’ continue the boogie-based theme, grooving so hard they twist knee deep into the dirty ground beneath them, and ‘Bucktooth Woman’ touches nicely on a rockabilly beat to keep the good time feeling of this record pumping along. ‘Piss And Gas’ and ‘Unwelcome Guest’ tread an up-tempo, steady stoner rock formula that will have even the most conservative amongst you nodding approvingly in time to, before closer and official party downer ‘Gone Blues’ helps you uncoil gently with its acoustic strumming and “Ah ooh” chorus.

These guys are on tour with Orange Goblin in April, if you’re going make sure you get there early.”

Big thanks to Tom from Time To Blast webzine in France for this awesome review…it’s in French but I’ve been assured it is an awesome review.

Just found this awesome review of the album at Jukebox:Metal. Big thanks to Andy Lye for the kind words.

Following the mantra laid down in the title of their 2010 EP, The Simplicity of The Riff Is Key, UK stoner rockers Grifter build every one of their songs around monstrously grooving, simple riffs and smooth southern vocals. Something akin to Clutch jamming with Kim Thayil. Several songs, including opener Good Day For Bad News, Preacher And The Devil and Alabama Hotpocket and simply jammed with big riffs, and even when they go for an acoustic blues track to close with Gone Blues they can’t help but groove. Occasional references to their influences are dropped into the lyrics (for example a “yowza” at the end of Good Day For Bad News recalls Guns N’ Roses and Black Sabbath‘s Sweet Leaf is quoted during Strip Club), while obvious musical nods to Kyuss and similar are prevalent throughout. What gives the record such a impact soundwise is the flawless mix by Rich Robinson (not the Crowes one), which brings a rumbling bass and prominent drums fully up alongside the guitar, but without any one of them overpowering the other, which is something so many producers get wrong. Many of these tracks need not be taken too seriously, but that doesn’t stop Grifter from being just about the best stoner rock band in England right now, with no sign of running out of riffs yet. 4.5/5
